Save Christmas!
Just in case you had not read about this yet... Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) presented a resolution on the House floor that got accepted... the resolution? Heavy stuff about Iraq? Condemnation of Iran? Challenge to Health Care plan for kids? Hell no! It was a resolution to save Christmas! Here's the text of H.R. 847: Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian Faith. Yes, you read right. Apparently, Mr. King was responding to two other resolutions, one on the Muslim holiday of Ramadan and one on the Hindu holiday of Diwali. So he figured those moves are threatening and we must do something to bolster Christmas and Christians. Here is an excerpt from the resolution:
I wish somebody had the guts to offer a resolution on non-believers, our support for their courage, our acknowledgement of their historical significance internationally and nationally, to the formation of western civilization, and so forth... definitely rejecting bigotry and persecution against them. Then again, "To sleep, perchance to dream," eh?...Whereas the United States, being founded as a constitutional republic in the traditions of western civilization, finds much in its history that points observers back to its roots in Christianity...; Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;
(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;
(3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;
(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;
(5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and
(6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world.
In any case, the House voted for the resolution, although nine Democrats voted against it (Bravo!), and one Republican voted only "Present." (Bravo again!). Apparently Mr. King went on Fox News... (drum roll?) and said:
“I recognized that we’re a Christian nation founded on Christian principles, and we’re coming up to Christmastime…. It’s time we stood up and said so, and said to the rest of America, Be who you are and be confident. And let’s worship Christ and let’s celebrate Christmas for the right reasons.”Whose right reasons you ask? Don't be silly!
